Transit of Venus

This is the last chance in this lifetime to observe a transit of Venus, where Venus passes directly in front of the Sun. This rare event happens twice 8 years apart, then not again for over 100 years (last one was in 2004, next one is in 2117).

Members of the Santa Cruz Astronomy Club plan to setup their telescopes, with proper SAFE Solar filters, near the Lighthouse on West Cliff Drive, if the weather is cooperating, to show this to the public.... The transit begins at about 3:11pm PDT and will be ongoing til past sunset.

Club BBQ/Potluck

This month instead of our regular meeting (the Scout house is not available) we are having a BBQ/Potluck at Walter's house beginning at 4:00 PM.
Walter will provide plates, cups and utensils. Everyone will need to bring their own food to BBQ, as well as your own drinks and a dish to share.
Directions provided before the BBQ.

To RSVP to Walter and to get directions to his house - you can either call him at (831) 438-1214 or e-mail at

UCSC Venus Transit Lecture Series

The transit of Venus will be the subject of a series of lectures at UCSC that will explain the scientific and historical significance of this extraordinary event.

A transit of Venus occurs when Venus passes directly between the sun and earth. This alignment is rare, coming in pairs that are eight years apart but separated by over a century. The last transit of Venus was a thrilling sight in 2004. After June 2012, the next event occurs in 2117.
